N.B. sewer system overwhelmed by rain Sunday

Jul 11, 2016 | 1:10 PM

The downpour that flooded some city streets this weekend was an anomaly, according to city officials.

A huge amount of rain happened in such a short amount of time the system was overwhelmed, Susanne Abe, the city’s communications coordinator said.

“It’s not on a regular basis that something like this happens and normally, under normal rainfall circumstances, the sewer system and the storm sewers would be able to handle that amount of rain,” she said.

A downpour briefly flooded several parts of the city Sunday afternoon, July 10. Some hard-hit areas included the intersection of 13th Ave. and 110th St. and the corner of 15th Ave. and 106th St.

Abe said because that kind of downpour is an anomaly, there are no plans to change the storm sewer system in North Battleford. She said with continued regular cleaning and maintenance of the sewer system it will be able to withstand future rainfall.

She said drivers did a good job this weekend slowing down to avoid creating the kind of waves which can flood basements.
