16-year-old girl accused in death of infant expected in Saskatoon court

Jul 5, 2016 | 8:21 AM

A 16-year-old girl charged in the death of an infant boy on Sunday is expected in court Tuesday morning for a bail hearing.

The teen made her first appearance at Saskatoon Provincial Court Monday. She walked in with her head down and face obscured by hair.

Court heard the girl is charged with second-degree murder after a baby boy died in Saskatoon Sunday.

Sources tell 650 CKOM News the infant was two months old.

Around 7 a.m. on July 3, officers were called to a home in the 200 block of Waterloo Crescent in Saskatoon where they found the injured infant.

The baby was taken to hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Saskatoon police opened an investigation into the death, the city’s ninth homicide of the year, and took a 16-year-old girl into custody. Hours later, she was charged for her alleged involvement.

The girl is not related to the victim’s family.

After the hearing Monday, family and friends of the little boy huddled together outside court. Before leaving, one man in the group said, “I invited her into my home” – speaking about the accused.

During the hearing, it was made known the teen had previous run-ins with the law; however, none of those charges were mentioned in court.

In addition to the count of second-degree murder, she’s also charged with breaching two youth court orders stemming from the same date: failure to keep the peace and failure to abstain from drugs and alcohol.
