The Battlefords Bandits U12 girl’s softball team went to Saskatoon over the weekend of June 3 to 5 and came home with gold medals around their necks after winning the Hustler Classic tournament.

The Bandits went 5-0 over the weekend, culminating with a 14-8 win over the Unity Panthers in the final game. The gold medal wasn’t a surprise for coach Regan Lavallee.

“I expected to do quite well because I have a great little team,” she said. “I definitely wanted to place in the top four, if not the top two. We have four pitchers and to have depth in your pitching is huge. It was a complete team effort and everyone pulled together to help us win.”

The Bandits kicked off the tournament with a 15-0 drubbing of the Saskatoon Hustler Storm in a shortened three-inning game. In their second game the Bandits downed the Saskatoon Raiders Black 13-7, before a 9-2 win over the Humboldt Thunder to wrap up the preliminary round.

In the semi-final the Bandits found themselves facing off against the Tisdale River Dogs and came away with a 13-8 win, punching their ticket to the finals against the Unity Panthers, a formidable opponent.

“We were actually trailing by quite a lot in the final, but in the sixth inning we tied it up,” Lavallee said. “We held them to no runs in their half of the inning, and then in the top of the seventh we scored five more runs before going three up three down in the bottom half and that was it. Unity has won for a number of years in a row now, so to get a win in the final was great.”

Lavallee said they have another tournament in Moose Jaw the weekend of 17-19, and now that the girls have gotten a taste of winning, they’ll be more motivated to win again.

“For some of the girls it was the first medal they’ve ever won,” Lavallee said. “There was a lot of cheering and they were all so excited.”
