Midget Beavers win two games during opening weekend

The North Battleford Midget Beavers opened their 2016 season over the weekend, picking up two wins in four games.

Saturday, May 7, the Beavers played the Lumsden Cubs in a double-header, winning the opening game 7-5 before a 9-8 win in the second game. In the second win the Beavers mounted an enormous comeback, scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk-off the Cubs.

“It was a good way to start the season,” Beavers’ coach Mike Hudec said. “They’re pretty resilient. We had a few errors in our last game but for the most part they stay positive and don’t let themselves get down when they’re behind.”

The Beavers had to come from behind again in their first game against the Humboldt Dodgers Sunday, as they gave up four runs in one inning to find themselves trailing 5-4. They answered back the very next inning by scoring two runs to take the lead again, leading to an eventual 6-6 tie.

The Dodgers put their hitting caps on in the second game Sunday afternoon, routing the Beavers 12-3 in a shortened game.

“The last game we’d like to forget about but those kinds of games happen from time to time. That’s a sign of a good team if they can come back and rebound after a train wreck of a game like this,” Hudec said.

Hudec said he feels his teams hitting ability is their strength, but feels their defence is something they could work on as the season progresses. He notes their expectations are quite high considering they have a number of third-year players, along with others who played in midget last year despite being bantam aged.

The Beavers now look toward next weekend when they welcome the Moose Jaw Canucks May 14 for a double-header, before talking on the Regina Buffalo for another double-header the following day.
