City water flushing to affect east side of North Battleford

May 9, 2016 | 6:46 AM

Residents of North Battleford’s east side should be prepared to store up their water.

Starting Monday, May 9, the city is flushing-out a portion of North Battleford’s water system to maintain the lines and ensure water quality. During the nighttime flushing people in the affected areas are advised not to use the water.

“When we do the water flushing we run water with high pressure through the lines, and the purpose is to maintain the water system,” Suzanne Abe, the city’s communication coordinator explained.

The high velocity water effectively scrubs the inside of the pipes. The water then carries out the built-up material.

Abe said the city will put up signs in the sections of town where water main flushing is taking place. The work is done at 8 p.m. through the night until 8 a.m.

“…during that time we highly recommend not to use any water from the taps and turn off any devices that use water like water softeners, freezers, sprinklers, that kind of thing,” Abe said.

She recommended filling up a large container or the bathtub before 8 p.m. The city will not be responsible for any damaged appliances or stained laundry.

Crews will begin with the lines between Water Treatment Plant 1 in the river valley and the water tower. The Riverview neighbourhood will be next, followed by areas east of the tower focused along 11th Ave. The flushing will head north from there, between 106th and 112th Sts. Crescents and avenues north of 11th will be next, and finally streets and avenues south of 11th.

Abe said the signs will come down when a neighbourhood is finished. When your neighbourhood is complete, homeowners should run an outside tap or a faucet to clear out any sediment or discolouration.

The flushing process is expected to be complete by May 20.
