First snowfall for parts of Sask. as south still waits for winter

The first brush with winter came for many parts of Saskatchewan overnight Wednesday.

While Environment Canada had called for snowfall throughout most of the province, areas to the south were mainly spared.

Red Pheasant First Nation narrowly escapes fire disaster

There were some anxious moments at the Red Pheasant First Nation on Tuesday as a prairie fire backed by hurricane force winds raced towards the community. Luckily for the community of nearly 600, Mother Nature intervened and there were no injuries or property damage.

Fire pits have been banned at provincial parks for the Labour Day weekend. The R.M. of North Battleford has followed suit and issued a fire ban in the city until further notice.

Fire ban in place in R.M. of North Battleford

With 34 wildfires currently burning in Saskatchewan, including three that have forced the evacuation of more than 1,500 people from Pelican Narrows, the North Battleford Fire Department has announced a fire ban in the R.M. of North Battleford effectively immediately.

A special air quality warning has been issued for the Battlefords and Meadow Lake areas.

Special air quality advisory issued

It’s going to be another smoky, hazy day in area and it could stay that way until the weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality warning for areas surrounding the Battlefords, Meadow Lake, Unity and Prince Albert.

Locals marvel at solar eclipse

Whether it was online or in the great outdoors, thousands of Battleford and Meadow Lake residents witnessed the first solar eclipse seen in Canada since 2014.
