Best Pharmacy: Discovery Co-Op

Having a good relationship with new and perspective clients is a big part of what it takes to be successful pharmacy these days, and those relationships are always front and centre for the staff at the Discovery Co-op Pharmacy.

“Relationships are important. We want to make sure we can provide our clients with the support and education needed.”  said pharmacy manager Garth Walls.

So it’s no surprise the pharmacy was recently named as Best Pharmacy in the Battlefords for the Best of the Best Awards.

Located at the Discovery Co-op Mall, Mr. Walls said knowing his clients and their medications, providing them with knowledge and expertise, and ensuring they have all the information they need is a focus for him and his staff at Discovery Co-op Pharmacy.

“As a pharmacist, you’re only as good as your team, and we have a great staff here,” said Mr. Walls.

The four full-time pharmacists and two licensed technicians are available to offer customers counselling on their prescriptions, including important facts on how to take their medication and what to expect, as well as additional health care tips to assist them in selecting non-prescription products.

“Some of the most important thing we can do for our customers is to help them take their medication, and to remember to take it on time, to not miss medications and not duplicate medications,” said Mr. Walls.

One of the ways the staff go out of their way for their customers is to help program customer’s phones to act as reminders of when to take their medications and which ones to take.

Staying up to date with the ever-changing world of pharmacy and the roles pharmacists now play is also important.

“The world of pharmacy has changed quite a bit in the last five years. We can prescribe some medications and we can make sure people don’t run out of their medications. We also watch for interaction between all their medications. With our customers permission we can access their liver, kidney  and lab test results. We can use this information to determine if medication or dose changes need to be discussed with their doctor .” said Mr. Walls.

“A big part of what pharmacy does right now is to be a watchdog for drug interactions and making sure the medication a doctor prescribed is going to work with all the other medication and lifestyle.” he added
