Biggar RCMP arrest wanted man after car chase

Jun 20, 2018 | 10:00 AM

RCMP in Biggar arrested a wanted man after he allegedly led them on a brief chase June 18.

According to RCMP, police laid charges of assault with a weapon and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle against 31-year-old Travis Stehr, of Paradise Hill, Sask. on June 11, stemming from incidents which allegedly occurred June 4. RCMP officers received a tip that Stehr was in the R.M. of Biggar June 18, but when they located his vehicle and turned on their lights and sirens, the driver took off.

Officers from the Biggar, Unity, and Kindersley RCMP detachments joined in the pursuit, RCMP said, before the suspect vehicle was located just west of Landis near Highway 14. Stehr was located in a nearby wooded area, RCMP said, and was taken into custody without further incident.

Stehr is now facing new charges due to the chase, RCMP said, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, and possession of break-in instruments. He made his first appearance in North Battleford Provincial Court June 19, RCMP said, and will appear again Thursday. The charges against him have not yet been tested before the courts.

Biggar RCMP Detachment Commander Sgt. Colin Sawrenko thanked the public and news organizations for the assistance they provided throughout the case.

“I would like to thank the media [for] helping bring attention to this investigation,” Sawrenko said in a statement.

“I would also like to thank the citizens of Biggar and surrounding area for their diligence in reporting information to police. The partnership between Biggar RCMP and our local Rural Crime Watch was extremely valuable in this investigation.”
