Town looking into safety concerns at Highway 4 intersection

Jun 18, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The Town of Battleford is looking to improve safety at the problematic intersection of Highway 4 and Grid Road 656.

Council accepted CAO John Enns-Wind’s recommendation to pass a resolution calling on the province to look into the matter, as Highway 4 is both the province’s jurisdiction and financial responsibility.

The intersection is located just south of the bridge over Battle River and at the bottom of the valley beside Battle River. In his report, Enns-Wind said the town and the R.M. of Battle River have both received complaints about this intersection. People were concerned the highway is too narrow, which creates difficulties when vehicles need to turn west off the highway. The CAO reported drivers are also worried about trucks increasing their speed at the intersection preparing to go up the hill ahead, while family vehicles are slowing down to make the turn.

“They are very concerned that somebody is going to get rear-ended,” Enns-Wind said.

Enns-Wind proposed three possible solutions. The town could extend street lighting south of the intersection, extend the in-town speed limit of 80 km/h south of the intersection, or the more costly option of widening the highway leading to Grid Road 656 to allow for a turning lane. The resolution directed the mayor and CAO to work with regional partners to enhance the safety of the intersection and to send a letter to the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure expressing the town’s safety concerns.
