Battlefords Humane Society on track for new building

A new home for the animals at Battlefords Humane Society isn’t so far away.

Two years ago, the structural integrity of the current building came under question. The 27-year-old building on 114th St. wasn’t originally built as an animal care facility. Fundraising for the Battlefords Humane Society’s new building is going very well, according to Shelter Co-ordinator Michele Spark.

“We have about $550,000 that we’ve raised and are looking at a property on Fyfe Ave.,” Spark said. “We’re looking at building the new shelter and a boarding facility both at the same time, and we’re currently waiting on a final agreement between the City of North Battleford and us regarding a new operational budget and capital funding for the new facility.”

The $550,000 is a huge step towards the fundraising goal of $1.7 million that the humane society has set, but the fundraising won’t cover the total cost of the new building. The total project is expected to carry a price tag of around $2.6 million, with $1.6 million towards the new shelter and $1 million for the boarding shelter.
