Teddy Bear Clinic brings families and health, education providers together

A rainy day didn’t dampen the spirits of organizers of the annual Teddy Bear Clinic in North Battleford, Friday.

The event, which featured a variety of interactive games and activities for parents and kids, was organized by the Battlefords Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECIP) to increase awareness about ECIP and other health and education resources in the community focused on early childhood development.

The Teddy Bear Clinic was initially planned for Central Park but was moved as a result of inclement weather.

“Even though it was a little more congested inside and we had a few less [visitors] than what we typically have, we were pretty close to 400 in total, with parents and children… So it went off without a hitch,” said Battlefords ECIP executive director Colleen Sabraw. “Everyone seemed happy and excited, and enjoyed themselves.”

ECIP Week, which ran from May 27 to June 1, started with a balloon lift-off celebration at city hall to mark the occasion.

“We had various activities going on this week, including the Circle of Learning and the Toddler Activity Group. The end of the week was our annual Teddy Bear Clinic,” said Sabraw.

The aim of the event is furthermore designed to inform families about services available in the Battlefords, said Sabraw, as well as some of the activities coming up this summer they may want to participate in.

Around 30 agencies involved in the early childhood community network, including Kids First and the Family Resources Network, came together to meet with and offer information to parents as part of the Teddy Bear Clinic day’s activities, as partners in the project.
