May 31, 2018 | 5:00 PM

It was overall positive news for the City of North Battleford when the Battlefords RCMP gave its latest quarterly crime report to council earlier this week.

The report covers the January to March quarter of this year.

The RCMP’s total calls for service overall saw a significant decrease at 2,726 for the first quarter in 2018, which is over 100 less than the 2,880 reports for the same time last year.

Battleford’s RCMP Insp. John Sutherland said in his report there has been about a notable drop in violent offences, which he attributes to support from “extra resources and deterrent patrols.”

Some of the stats show decreases to break and enters and crimes against persons, but increases to property crimes.

Property offences up

For property offences, including thefts, mischief, fraud and possession of stolen goods, numbers increased by over 100, coming in at 662 for the first quarter, compared to 556 for the same time last year.

Drug offences also increased, with 48 reports for the period this year, compared to 45 last year.

However, many categories saw decreases.

Crimes against persons, such as robbery, assault, sexual assault, and harrassing phone calls for example, saw a decrease – dropping to 253 for the period this year, compared to 280 for the same time last year.

Break and enters experience drop

Residential break and enters declined considerably, reported at 31 for the current period, below from 51 for the same time in 2017.

The break and enters to businesses dropped slightly to eight for this year, compared to nine in 2017 for the period.

Reports for impaired driving also declined, coming in at 43 this year, compared to 55 for the same time last year.

Vehicle collisions were slightly less than last year with 72 reports for the period this year, compared to 74 at the same time in 2017.

Criminal code offences, including weapons offences, dropped by more than 100, coming in at 390 for the period this year, compared to 495 for the same time in 2017.
