Volunteers, city staff take part in spring clean up

May 2, 2018 | 2:00 PM

City staff and volunteers will be rolling up their sleeves Thursday collecting garbage and debris that has accumulated over the winter months in North Battleford as part of the annual Spring Cleanup.

Environmental Manager Tammy MacCormack said the event running tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is open to anyone who wants to help beautify the city.

“We have had some groups and individuals volunteer to help out again this year,” MacCormack said. “The more people who come out the more areas we can get done in the city.”

City crews will be once again be picking up trash at the city entrances on Territorial Dr. and Highways 4 and 16. She also said a group of students from John Paul II will be collecting litter in neighbourhoods close to the school.

Last year more than 2,000 kg of garbage was collected during the seven-hour cleanup most of which according to MacCormack was disposable items.

“Most of the litter we collect is from restaurants,” she added. “Traditional stuff like food wrappers, coffee cups and bottles will be what we will see the most of out there.”

At noon tomorrow, everyone involved in the cleanup is invited to a barbecue lunch at the Fire Hall on 104 St. for a free hamburger and cold beverage.

If you would like to volunteer for the cleanup, contact Tammy MacCormack at North Battleford City Hall.
