SJHL playoffs to continue: Bruins to meet Hawks in league final

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League voted unanimously to move ahead with the Canalta Cup Finals between the Estevan Bruins and Nipawin Hawks on Wednesday afternoon, with the series set to begin Saturday, April 14.

The SJHL playoffs were postponed after the tragic accident involving the Humboldt Broncos Friday, which killed 15 people and sent 14 more to hospital. At the time, the Broncos trailed the Hawks in the semifinals 3-1, with the winner set to play Estevan in the final.

On Wednesday, all 12 appointed governors voted to resume play, according to Nipawin Hawks president Darren Opp.

“We had a gruelling decision to make with respects on how we can pay tribute and honour the Humboldt Broncos,” SJHL President Bill Chow said in a press release. “On behalf of the Board of Governors, this intensive decision has been made and that decision is to carry through and finish off the 2017-2018 season. The league will play hockey.”
