Movie night kicks off fundraising for Relay for Life

Apr 6, 2018 | 5:00 PM

While the Battlefords Relay for Life may still be two months away, the organizing committee has been busy trying to raise awareness about the 12-hour marathon within the local community.

This year’s Relay for Life will be held Friday, June 8 at City Field in North Battleford’s Centennial Park to kick off the awareness campaign the committee is hosting a showing of the movie The Bucket List on Sunday, April 15 at the Capitol Theatre.

“We wanted to bring the Relay to people’s attention early in the year so they can start thinking about being involved,” committee sponsorship chair Tammy Prongua said. “We want our Relay for Life back to wear it was a few years ago when we had over 40 teams take part and one way to do this is to get the word out.”

Since 2002, the Battlefords Relay for Life has raised $1.5 million for cancer research.

“We saw that the Capitol Theatre had done something similar for Ladies Night Out and it was quite successful, we thought that we would do something along the same line,” Prongua said.

The movie, The Bucket List, was released in 2007 and stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, who are two terminally ill men who leave a cancer ward and head out on an adventure to fulfill their “bucket list” of things they want to experience before they die.

“We picked The Bucket List because it deals with cancer in the storyline,” she said. “It’s the perfect movie to get people thinking about the Relay for Life.”

Capitol Theatre manager Ursula Swindler said when the committee approached her about helping with a fundraiser she was excited to get involved.

“I have been involved in the Relay for Life before and know how important it is to the community,” Swindler added. “So when the team reached out I jumped at the chance to help out.”

Swindler said The Bucket List was an ideal choice to show at the event because of its content.

“Who doesn’t love this movie?“ she said. “It’s fun with a great message of hope, courage and friendship.”

Tickets are $10 each and there will be many raffle items to bid on in the lobby of the Capitol Theatre.

Doors for the fundraiser will open at 3 p.m. with the movie starting at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the Capitol Theatre and at Yellow Submarine in the Territorial Mall.
