Retired Sakewew High School principal found dead in Saskatoon

Apr 3, 2018 | 5:00 PM

A community is reeling after an esteemed former Sakewew High School principal was found dead in Saskatoon on April 1.

Fifty four year old Colin Sutherland from Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation was found dead after Saskatoon police were called around 11:30 p.m., April 1 and were told there was an injured man in an apartment on the 200 block of 5th Avenue North.

When officers arrived, they found the Sutherland deceased.

Major crimes and forensic units, along with the coroner’s office, are investigating the death.

Sheritta Kahpeaysewat is facing a charge of second-degree murder related to the incident.

Sutherland was recognized for starting Sakewew High School in 2002. The school was formed through a partnership with Battlefords Tribal Council and the public and Catholic school divisions to offer Indigenous students an opportunity to learn more about their culture as part of their education.

Speaking outside the courthouse, Sutherland’s loved ones said Sutherland and Kahpeaysewat had been dating.

Sutherland’s daughter, Kelsie, said she didn’t know much about the relationship.

“Honestly I didn’t put the effort into getting to know her… I just didn’t want to meet her I guess,” Kelsie Sutherland said.

“But I didn’t hear of any arguments.”

Colin Sutherland was a former teacher and principal of Sakewew High School who had retired in 2017.

Kelsie said her father had a great sense of humour.

“He was so funny. He was like Michael Scott from The Office,” she said.

“We are so devastated.”

Kahpeaysewat, of the Moosomin First Nation, is known as a singer who has performed at venues across Saskatchewan.

Her friend Bill Landrie said the woman’s family hasn’t been able to talk to her about what may have happened.

He said any sort of violence would be out of character for Kahpeaysewat.

“I wouldn’t have ever thought she would’ve done something like this,” he said.

Kelsie Sutherland posted information on Sakewew High School’s Facebook Page about a wake to honour her father. The wake is taking place April 4 at 6 p.m. at Veterans’ Memorial Hall in Beardy’s & Okemasis Cree Nation. A funeral will be held Friday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at Veterans’ Hall in Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation.

Kahpeaysewat has been remanded until her next appearance on Thursday.

The allegations have not been proven in court.
