CJNB garners nomination for SCMA award

Mar 29, 2018 | 2:00 PM

When the Saskatchewan Country Music Association awards are handed out this year in Prince Albert, a local radio station could be recognized with some hardware.

Saskatchewan Country CJNB was nominated as a secondary market station for this year’s award show. The radio awards are divided into major and secondary market categories based on the local population. To be nominated in the major market category the city must have a population of 20,000 or more, while secondary market stations serve regions with populations below 20,000.

“It’s certainly nice to be recognized for this prestigious award,” CJNB Program Co-ordinator Nic Fransoo said. “It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication that our crew at CJNB has not only for our local community but for the country music community as well.”

In 2017, 1050 CJNB celebrated 70 years of serving the Battlefords and surrounding area with news and entertainment, Fransoo said, all while providing a venue for emerging artists to display their talents on a local level.

“Country music is certainly one of the hottest formats in radio today, and what makes it even more special is when you have great local artists that we support,” Fransoo said. “Look at Brody Siebert, Brock Andrews, and Aces Wyld; all local area performers and all nominated for SCMA awards.”

Born and raised in Spiritwood, Siebert is nominated for Male Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year for his collaboration with Aaron Goodvin and Kristina Kidd for “Ring on It.”

Also receiving two nominations was Aces Wyld. Frontman Steve Andrew is from Wilkie and lived in North Battleford for a time, while fiddle, banjo and mandolin player Sam Derbawka currently calls the Battlefords home. The group was again nominated for Group of the Year and Emerging Artist of the Year while Brock Andrews, who was born in Wilkie and moved to Battlefords, was nominated for Emerging Artist of the Year.

Meanwhile, former CJNB radio personality Matt Ryan, who is currently entertaining listeners in the Meadow Lake area on CJNS, received two nominations for on-air personality in a secondary market and country music person of the year.

The awards will be held in Prince Albert April 27 to 29.
