Canadian folk singer Stephen Fearing coming to The Gog

Mar 26, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Juno-award-winning folk musician Stephen Fearing will be returning to North Battleford next month to play a house concert at The Gog again.

Local resident Laird Brittin arranged to bring Fearing to the area by connecting with the artist. He said he heard the veteran folk musician was playing in Saskatoon, so he reached out to see if Fearing could also make a stop in North Battleford. Brittin said Fearing has a loyal following in the area, so he wasn’t surprised to see the show is close to selling out already.

“He’s played folk festivals all over Canada,” Brittin said. “He constantly tours. Anyone who has followed good folk and roots music will know who Stephen is.”

Brittin said the GOG provides an intimate setting to hear the artist, so the show should be a special treat for anyone planning to attend.

Kelly Waters, who has been hosting house concerts at The Gog for a number of years, said she is thrilled to have Fearing return to perform once again.

“He is a really sensitive musician, every note, the artistry is incredible,” she said.

Fearing, who was also one of the founding members of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, said he is looking forward to performing a solo acoustic set at the local concert.

“It’s nice if you haven`t been back to the region for a while to get somewhere you want to play and fill in a day off,” Fearing, who last played The Gog more than five years ago, told battlefordsNOW

Fearing said he will be playing from his past catalogue as well as songs by Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and selections from his latest album Every Soul’s A Sailor.

“It came out in January 2017, so I’ve been out touring it for quite some time now,” he said. “I haven’t been through the prairie provinces yet, so this will be a chance to play the songs from that record to people who haven’t heard it yet.”

While many people call his style roots music, Fearing said it crosses a number of different genres.

“I write and play primarily on an acoustic guitar, although a lot of this album was written on a Telecaster with a band in mind,” he added.

Based in Victoria, Fearing said travel is a common theme in many of his songs.

“I’ve been traveling since I was a little kid,” he said. “I was born in North Vancouver but I grew up in Ireland, so there is something that happens to you when you travel a lot from a young age. You learn to be an observer, especially as a kid fitting into new schools. You have to get a sense of the land pretty quick. That’s a good skill to have as a songwriter.”

Fearing will be playing The Gog April 15.
