Vikings advance in 5A, Crusaders’ seasons end in 4A at regionals

Mar 19, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Home court helped the John Paull II Crusaders senior boys’ basketball team top Lumsden Friday, but it wasn’t enough to get them past Weyburn as they fell 79-74 in 4A regionals Saturday.

The narrow defeat meant the Crusaders, who were seeded seventh, will not qualify for Hoopla this season as the four rural teams from 4A will be Moose Jaw Central (first), Weyburn (second), Moose Jaw Peacock (fourth), and Moose Jaw Vanier (sixth).

On the girls’ side, the fifth-seeded senior Crusaders got past Martensville Friday by a 10-point margin, but only managed 19 points in Saturday’s loss to fourth-seeded Moose Jaw Central. The loss meant the girls will also not qualify for Hoopla.

The four rural teams in 4A on the girls side at Hoopla will be Melfort (first), Moose Jaw Peacock (2nd), Estevan (third), and Moose Jaw Central (fourth).

Both Comp Vikings off to Hoopla in 5A

Both the senior boys and senior girls from North Battleford Comprehensive High School finished in second at their respective regional tournaments this weekend, which was enough for each to get a berth to Hoopla.

The senior boys, who entered as the second seed, blew out Prince Albert St. Mary’s Friday and then had little trouble with Estevan in the semifinals, topping them 93-71. Although their berth was secured after that second win, their third and final game against Yorkton Regional was a big one because it would impact seeding for next weekend.

Unfortunately, the boys came up just short, falling 88-83 after leading for almost the entire game. Riely Rathwell led the Vikings with 29 points.

On the girls’ side, the Vikings (third seed) took down Weyburn Friday 63-52, and then beat P.A. St. Mary’s (second) 65-40 Saturday afternoon.

In the final against top-ranked P.A. Carlton, things didn’t go as planned, leading to a 83-49 loss.

Hoopla Schedule

Hoopla will take place in Prince Albert starting Thursday, March 22, with both Vikings teams hitting the court that evening.

As the second seed from rurals, the senior boys will have to go up against Holy Cross from Saskatoon at 7:45 p.m., who won the third place game in the Saskatoon city finals.

The senior girls are set to play against Centennial from Saskatoon at 6 p.m., who also won the third place game in the Saskatoon city finals.
