It was another good day for those competing in cross-country skiing in the Saskatchewan Winter Games Saturday.
More than 60 youth and a few Para-Nordic athletes participated in the races at Blue Mountain, near North Battleford.
Nicholas Charles, from La Ronge, won gold with Team North Saturday in the Sr. Male relay.
“I feel pretty good, proud,” said Charles, who has cross-country skied for six years.
The 14-year-old said his grandmother Sally Venne is his coach and was there to cheer him on during the day.
Another participant was Heidi Wall from Team Saskatoon who recalled how she managed to finish a race the day before with just one pole. Despite the challenge, she came through to the end and even picked up a bronze medal.
“My friend stepped on my pole and it fell off at the very beginning,” she said.
Wall said she used her legs to manoeuvre to make up for just having the one pole to try to get through the race, and succeeded.
Saturday, her team received gold for the Jr. Female Relay.
Mattea Patterson, 14, of Team Regina, was one of the athletes who took home gold in the Sr. Female relay race.
“The hill was the hardest part – trying to get up it,” said Patterson, who has around eight years of cross-country skiing experience.
Patterson said she enjoys the camaraderie of the sport the alongside spending time with friends.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said the exuberant youth.
