Riders Duron Carter charged with marijuana possession

Saskatchewan Roughrider receiver Duron Carter has taken to Twitter following news of his arrest for marijuana possession Thursday night.

“I know, I know. Life,” he tweeted, along with a face palm emoji, Friday afternoon.

Court records show Carter was arrested and charged Feb. 1. According to the Riders, it happened around midnight at the Saskatoon airport.

“We can confirm there was an incident last night where Duron Carter was charged with marijuana possession,” the statement read.

“We are working to gather more information and continue to monitor the situation.”

Saskatoon police tweeted they were called to the airport after border officials located marijuana in a passenger’s bag. Further details released by police state a passenger was stopped and searched, which lead to the finding.

Carter then replied to the police tweet, with “chill please…I expect a little professionalism.” It appears to have since been deleted.

The 26-year-old athlete has since been released from custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance March 27 in Saskatoon Provincial Court.

Carter is also facing a charge out of Winnipeg for possession of a controlled substance on Nov. 25, 2017. A court spokesperson could not tell 980 CJME the type of drug he’s accused of possessing.

The CFL issued a statement Friday, saying “as this matter is before the courts, we have no comment.”

Carter attended a media announcement for the Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Dinner Friday morning in downtown Saskatoon.

He was named the Riders’ most outstanding player for the 2016-17 CFL season, amassing 73 catches for 1,043 yards and eight touchdowns in 17 starts at wide receiver.

He also started one game as a defensive back, in which he picked up nine tackles and an interception which he ran back 43 yards for a touchdown.

By the end of the season Carter was named both a CFL all-star and a West Division all-star.

The receiver signed a one-year extension with the Riders on Jan. 22.
