North Stars crack top-5 in CJHL top-20 once again

Jan 8, 2018 | 4:00 PM

The Battlefords North Stars are once again a top-five team in the country according to the latest Canadian Junior Hockey League top-20 rankings, a spot they haven’t held since early November.

On Nov. 14 the North Stars fell from third to eighth in the rankings. They hadn’t been able to crack the top-five since, until Monday morning, when the first rankings of 2018 had them in fifth in Canada.

This is the thirteenth straight week the North Stars have been a top-10 team in the rankings.

This past week, Battlefords defeated Kindersley 4-2 and then blew away the Notre Dame Hounds 5-1. They are now 26-5-2 this season, which is just about as good as they were last year, when they had a 27-6 record through 33 games and then won the league championship.

The North Stars are six points back of the Nipawin Hawks for first place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League standings, but the Hawks have played four more games. Nipawin has a 28-5-2-2 record and is ranked seventh nationally in the CJHL top-20. They have won 10 straight games and are 17-0-1 in their last 18.

The Thief River Falls Huskies (28-1) of the Superior International Junior Hockey League still hold the top spot overall.

The Carleton Place Canadians (CCHL) remain in second at 37-4-0-3 and Les Cobras de Terrebonne (LHJAAAQ, 29-4) remain in third.

The North Stars visit Nipawin for a highly anticipated match on Tuesday night and then head up north for a pair of games against the Bombers in Flin Flon on Friday and Saturday.
