SPHL recap: Blues keep winning, Combines pile on goals again

After the undefeated Hafford Hawks handed the Battleford Beaver Blues their first loss of the season on Dec. 22, the Blues have now rolled off three consecutive wins to begin 2018.

This past Saturday, they edged Glaslyn 5-4 at Battleford Arena, one day after topping the defending champion Edam Three Stars 6-3 on the road. Tyler Wasmuth led the way on the weekend with three goals and an assist in the two games.

The Blues currently sit tied for first place in the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League (SPHL) standings with a 9-1 record.

Forwards Cody Danberg and Brent Salzl currently sit 1-2 in league scoring, while linemate Mike George is fourth.

The Meota Combines are the other team at 9-1, who routed Shellbrook 11-6 on Saturday at the Civic Centre for their seventh straight victory. The Combines have hit double digits in goals three games in a row now, after a 12-4 victory on Dec. 23 and a 10-2 win on New Year’s Eve.

Thirteen different players had at least a point in the 11-6 home win, with Blake Tatchell’s three goals and an assist leading the way. Bryce Gatzke also had a hat-trick and Brody Tatchell had four points.

Blake Tatchell is third in league scoring with 23 points in just seven games and has the second-most goals at 13.

The Combines have averaged 8.9 goals for per game this season, the highest in the league by far.

In other SPHL action, Hafford went 2-0 this weekend to stay undefeated at 8-0, while Maymont and Radisson went 1-1. Shellbrook won their game on Friday 11-0 over Spiritwood, while Edam lost to Hafford after being dropped by Battleford on Friday.

The Combines next game is set for Wednesday, Jan. 10 on the road against Glaslyn, while the Beaver Blues next play this Friday, Jan. 12 against Shellbrook.
