Team Anderson to represent Saskatchewan at Scotties

Sherry Anderson will represent Saskatchewan on the national curling stage for the ninth time following a 7-6 extra end win in the Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts final.

The Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame inductee, along with her team of Krista and Kourtney Fesser and Karlee Korchinski battled past North Battleford’s Robyn Silvernagle, the top seed through the preliminary round Sunday night in Melfort. Anderson said her experience leading up to the final helped the team come out on top.

“Being loose and laid back but still being intense is what you need, the girls brought that today,” she said.

Anderson downed last year’s champion Penny Barker in the three versus four playoff game Saturday. The foursome moved on to defeat Chantelle Eberle in Sunday afternoon’s semi-final while Silvernagle cruised to the championship game with a victory in the one versus two playoff game. Anderson said the rink looked back on Saturday night’s game to prepare.

“I’m very proud of how they turned around their nerves in last night’s game to today,” she said.

Opening with last rock in the first end, Silvernagle scored twice, the teams blanked the second end before Anderson responded with single points over the next two ends tying the score 2-2. Silvernagle regained a two-point cushion in the fifth end. Anderson cut the lead to one in the sixth end but in the seventh end Silvernagle got that point back. Anderson played a hit and stick in the eighth end scoring a pair tying the game at 5-5. The possible turning point occurred in the ninth end when Silvernagle’s final stone slid too far allowing a steal of one for Anderson. Trailing by one heading to the final end Silvernagle scored one forcing an extra end without hammer. Anderson, facing two Silvernagle shot rocks drew onto the button securing the provincial title in the 11th end. She said the shot looked close from the start.

“Out of my hand it felt good. It was good that they could sweep the rock because they want to be able to sweep it,” Anderson said.

Anderson will return to the national Scotties for the first time since 2015 where she played third for Stephanie Lawton. This will be her fifth appearance a skip. The win was a day after Anderson’s 54th birthday bringing a special feeling to the victory.

“This one feels a little different because of my age, I don’t have many left. I feel very fortunate I can still compete,” Anderson said.

The national Scotties Tournament is in Penticton, B.C. from Jan. 27 to Feb. 4.
