Sask. Party leadership candidate Scott Moe visits North Battleford

Jan 6, 2018 | 11:55 AM

Saskatchewan Party leadership hopeful Scott Moe gave residents an update on his campaign during an event in the city Friday night.

The Rosthern-Shellbrook MLA spoke to around 25 people in attendance at the Empress Furniture and Carpet Superstore. His stopover in North Battleford comes just weeks before the party selects its new leader to replace outgoing Premier Brad Wall who announced his retirement from politics in August.

Moe, after pushing for support on the first or second ballot, highlighted a number ways he plans to tackle issues plaguing the province if elected, including the ongoing crime concerns in the area.

“There is much more work to do on this file,” he said while citing the federal government’s commitment to training more RCMP officers across the country.

“We need to do better as a community … and continue to set up our rural crime watches,” Moe added. “We need to do better at the provincial level as well.”

Further to this, Moe touched on the provincial crime initiative that came out of The Caucus Committee on Crime Reduction that was chaired by Battlefords MLA Herb Cox.

“There is no one solution that is going to fix this,” he added. “For us, there are multiple solutions we need to work on.”

The issue and impact of rising minimum wages currently underway in other provinces also surfaced during the event.

Moe said Saskatchewan’s minimum wage calculation, which is currently fixed to inflation rates, “seems to be working well.”

“We made that decision and it seems to be accepted quite well,” he added. “It was better than what we had before where politicians were setting the rate.”

As to what set himself apart from the others in the race and why members should vote for him, Moe pointed to his strong economic policy.

“Our team has put together an economic policy that is focused on growing the export value of products that are leaving our province,” he said. “Growing that export value will create jobs in communities right across this province, that will attract families from across North America and all around the world, and will allow us the opportunity to continue to grow the population of North Battleford and communities right across this province.”

Moe is accompanied in the leadership race by Tina Beaudry-Mellor, Gord Wyant, Ken Cheveldayoff and Alanna Koch. Party faithful will elect a new leader and premier of the province at a convention on Jan. 27 in Saskatoon.
