First baby of the new year has royal connection

Jan 4, 2018 | 1:00 PM

A Battleford couple are the proud parents of the first baby born in the new year at Battlefords Union Hospital.

Mom Kelly and dad Larry Halstead had their new baby, named William David Charles, on Wednesday.

“We’re happy he’s here,” said Kelly at the hospital Thursday morning.

Kelly said it was a long delivery process after coming in to the hospital on January 1.

“It’s my first. (We used) fertility so it took us a long time to get pregnant, but he’s here,” she said, adding she feels great.

The baby takes his name from names across the generations. Larry’s middle name is William, his father’s middle name is Charles and Kelly’s father’s name is David.

The little one, weighing 7.21 pounds (3,271 grams), also has a royal connection.

In choosing the baby’s name, Larry, who has British roots, said they also followed his family’s long tradition in naming their newborns after royalty, since his family on the Halstead-side used to be from royalty going back hundreds of years ago.

“The entire family tree has been named after an English king,” Larry said. “There are only five names we can choose from — all the names of royalty.”

The parents received a congratulatory certificate from Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie to recognize the honour of having the first baby of 2018.

The couple are originally from Windsor, Ontario and moved to Battleford about three years ago.
