2017 Year In Review – September

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2017, battlefordsNOW is taking a look at some of the top news items that made headlines and newsmakers over the past 12 months.

Crime was the major story of September with many violent incidents reported. On Sept. 15, a teenager was shot multiple times with a pellet gun during a robbery in North Battleford. RCMP reported the victim received minor injuries but the victim could face permanent nerve damage according to his mother. Police found the three males involved and charged one youth with robbery with a weapon, aggravated assault and using an imitation firearm.

Meanwhile on Wednesday Sept. 20, two suspects walked into a North Battleford business armed with an axe and bear mace and confronted a store employee. The thieves fled after stealing multiple packages of cigarettes. Two nights later on Sept. 22, a second robbery took place when a business on 100 St. was also robbed with bear spray. In this incident the culprits made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Two men were taken to hospital with what police called “serious injuries” after a robbery and assault with a weapon on Sept. 16 at a residence on the 9000 block of Panton Avenue in North Battleford. The initial investigation revealed a 23-year-old male entered the residence where there was another adult male and adult female and two youth inside. An altercation occurred, resulting in serious injuries to the two males. The 23-year-old male who entered the residence was taken to hospital and placed under arrest, while the other adult male was transported to hospital with serious injuries. The adult female was treated for minor injuries and the two youths were not physically injured in the altercation.

There were several scary moments for students and teachers at the JPII School in North Battleford on Sept. 21 after the school received a bomb threat. The threat was received around 1:20 p.m. and the school was evacuated for the remainder of the day. Battlefords RCMP completed a thorough search of John Paul II High School and no suspicious materials have been located. 

A 26-year-old man was charged following a fatal crash Sept. 22 near Lloydminster that killed three women and sent another to hospital. Brandon Stucka of Lloydminster SK was charged with criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, failure to stop at the scene of an accident, flight from police, possession of property obtained by crime, and breach of undertaking. At about 3 a.m. on Sept. 22, a heavy duty, flat-deck truck collided with a minivan in the eastbound lane on Highway 16.  Police reported they were pursuing the truck prior to the collision as it was stolen. Two women, aged 37 and 35 were pronounced dead at the scene, while a 53-year-old woman later died of her injuries. A 32-year-old woman remains in critical condition in the Edmonton hospital. The women from Edmonton were travelling to Minnesota to visit family when the collision occurred.
