Local animal shelter still needs help to fund new building

Dec 17, 2017 | 8:00 AM

There is still quite a bit to be done for the local animal shelter, as it attempts to raise funds for a new building and kennel.

The Battlefords Humane Society is striving to secure roughly $1.6 million for a new building and another $1 million for a kennel. The organization currently sits at just over $500,000 raised, but according to manager Michelle Spark, they have been forced to put major fundraising aside over the past couple months.

“Everybody got so busy fundraising for the building we all kind of forgot that we still need to operate,” Spark said. “A lot of our fundraising efforts lately have been towards medical bills, which is something we really need donations for and basic operations.”

Spark said the shelter is currently in talks with the city about receiving a grant towards the new building but does not know if she will get it or how much it will be until the city budget is finalized.

The new building is planned to be around 5,500 square feet. Spark added the current building will only last a couple more years and if the shelter can’t reach its goal by then, it will have to compromise.

“If we can’t come up with the money it just means we are going to have to downsize the building. We aren’t building anything huge, to begin with, but if we have to build smaller then we will have to build smaller.”

Spark asked anyone interested in donating to call or visit their website. There is an option to donate monthly and have it automatically taken off a credit card. Donors receive a tax receipt at years end.
