Residents in the Battlefords region will have the opportunity to hear award-winning music from one of the top current Christmas albums on the world Billboard charts in the coming weeks.

The Sultans of String are a multi-Juno nominated group based out of Toronto, will be appearing at the Dekker Centre on Thursday Dec. 21 to support their latest album Christmas Caravan, which has received rave reviews worldwide.

“This is the first time we will play the Dekker Centre and we are very excited to take folks on our musical sleigh ride,” said band leader and violinist Chris McKhool in an interview with battlefordsNOW. “Doing a Christmas album and supporting it with a tour across Canada has been a great experience for us and sometime we have wanted to do for many years.”

Christmas Caravan debuted at number six on Billboard’s World Charts and recently reached number three on Canada’s Nielsen World music charts. The album also landed on the New York Times Christmas Hits list.

“What we have done is taken the energy and drive of the world’s rhythm that we love to play and put them into Christmas songs that people have loved to hear for generations,” said McKhool. “It has seemed to resonate with audiences as well because sales have exceeded our expectations.”

Including McKhool, the Sultans of String are comprised of award-winning musicians from across Canada such as Kevin Laliberte (guitar), Drew Birston (bass), Eddie Paton (flamenco guitar), Chendy Leon (drums), and vocalist Rebecca Campbell.

“You will hear Christmas favorites like you have never heard them before when you come to the show,” McKhool added. “We have ripped the bark off these songs and transformed them using many musical styles including gypsy jazz from Eastern Europe, East Coast Keltic, Cuban rhythm and more.”

Dekker Centre general manager Moe McGuinty was ecstatic to have the opportunity to bring the Sultans of String to the Battlefords area and said the audience will be “wowed” by the performance.

“These are world class entertainers and to have them bring their musical stylings to the Dekker Centre is such a thrill for us,” said McGuinty. “It’s going to be an evening you soon won’t forget.”

Tickets for the Sultans of String are available at the Dekker Centre box office or online.
