AAA Stars keep steady at .500 following weekend with Trojans

Dec 11, 2017 | 10:00 AM

The Battlefords AAA Stars split their doubleheader this weekend with the third-place Tisdale Trojans, whipping them 6-1 on Saturday before falling 4-1 on Sunday.

Thanks to Saturday’s win, the Stars continue to hold down the eighth and final playoff spot with an 11-11 record.

North Battleford native Luke Fennig led the way on Saturday with a two-goal performance that helped get the Stars out in front; first 1-0, and then 2-1.

Adam Beckman, Shayde Peterson, Damon McKenzie, and Ty Mosimann would then each add a goal, as the Stars never trailed in the game. Mosimann and Peterson each recorded a three-point night, while Matthew Flodell and Tye Scherger each add two assists.

In goal, Joseph Young made 30 saves on 31 shots to grab his fifth win of the season.

Young also played on Sunday, and was bombarded with 48 shots. The 16-year-old made 44 saves, including 24 in the second period alone, but didn’t get enough goal support.

Only Jackson Tonnies found the back of the net on a late second period power play that cut the Trojans led to 2-1. In the third, Tisdale forwards Kaden Kohle and Cade Hayes put the game out of reach with singles to make it a 4-1 final.

Beckman and Mosimann’s six-game point streaks both came to an end on Sunday. It was the first time they failed to record a point since Nov. 19.

On positive from Sunday was the penalty kill, which went a perfect 7-for-7.

The Stars have a busy final week before their winter break. They’ll play five games in an eight-day span from Dec. 14 to 21.

The hectic stretch begins in Saskatoon against the Blazers on Thursday.
