The town of Battleford's roads should be in good shape this winter with the purchase of a new grader.

Council authorized up to $300,000 for the piece of equipment. Mayor Ames Leslie said the purchase was necessary.

"Part of the town policy is to replace all our equipment - whether it's the heavy equipment, or our vehicles, or our trucks - on a 10-year cycle," Leslie said. "This grader was up in its 10th year."

The old grader was slated for replacement in 2018, but due to discounts available council agreed to purchase the new one this year instead.

Not only needed for snow removal, the new grader could be used for road upgrades during the rest of the year.

He added after a recent snowfall, the town's streets were 90 per cent cleared shortly afterwards.

"Our works department, they do an amazing job making sure the streets are cleaned every day," Leslie added.

The new grader is expected by the New Year.
