Silvernagle rink hoping fortunes turn in Red Deer

Nov 16, 2017 | 4:00 PM

After taking several weeks off from active competition to refocus and work on strategies, the Robyn Silvernagle rink hits the pebbled ice this weekend at the Red Deer Curling Classic.

The 23-team triple knockout event features many of the top curlers on the World Curling Tour, including last year’s Red Deer Classic winner Nadine Scotland of Alberta and former champion Sherry Anderson of Saskatoon.

“The break in the schedule gave us some time to work on some fundamentals both individually and as a team,” Silvernagle said. “Now that each of us has access to ice we should see much better results going forward.”

The team representing the Twin Rivers Curling Club consists of skip Robyn Silvernagle (North Battleford), mate Jolene Campbell (Regina), second Dayna Demers (Meadow Lake) and lead Kara Thevenot (Prince Albert) play their first matchup at 4:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

“We are looking forward to getting back into competitive curling this weekend,” she added. “I know we haven’t had the results we were hoping for so far this weekend but we have learned just as much from a loss as we have with a victory.”

The Silvernagle rink captured the curling hearts of everyone in the province last year at the Viterra Scotties Provincials last January when they came within one end of making it to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

She said being that close to the national championship was exciting but it also adds a bit of pressure.

“You always want to do better than you did last year,” she said. “We definitely have a target on our backs and everyone is out to beat you for sure.”

She also thinks that her team has done a good job at turning that added pressure in their favor.

“It’s all how you perceive it in your head,” Silvernagle replied. “We turn that pressure into something positive and go out and focus at the job at hand.”

battlefordsNOW will provide results from the Red Deer Curling Classic throughout the weekend.
