Ingram acclaimed as Liberal candidate for local byelection

Turtleford businessman Larry Ingram has been acclaimed as the Liberal candidate to run in the upcoming Battlefords-Lloydminster byelection.

Ingram, who previously ran in the 2015 election, said he feels confident about entering the race.

“This is a good opportunity for myself and the community, the constituency, to put a strong voice forward in the federal Liberal party,” he said, adding he is “confident that this one will show better” in the local riding.

Ingram added the Liberal party is gaining more success in the area over the years.

“We moved in 2015 from three per cent of the popular vote to over 16 per cent,” he said. “People are saying they will be supporting me, so I’m optimistic.”

Ingram has previous experience as the councillor for the RM of Mervin.

“When I was a councillor there I also became the vice-chair of the North-Central Transportation Planning Committee – an advisory board to the department of highways,” he said.

Ingram works as a sheet metal worker and contractor. He also operates a small farm in the area as a third generation farmer.

Some issues he is focused on include what he calls the depopulation of the rural area.

He would like to see more people move to the rural area to help build up the population and add a boost to the economy.

Ingram also has a strong interest in having a good relationship with the First Nation community to advance economic development.

“The cattle prices are up, the grain prices are up,” he said. “But still we have a loss of population. The loss of population is one of my biggest concerns.”

He is also interested in supporting mental health efforts.

Ingram said he lost his son to suicide a number of years ago so the issue is close to his heart.

He said the Liberal government wants to raise awareness about the issue and look for solutions.

“It makes sense to me to be a part of that,” he said.

Getting ready for the Dec. 11 byelection, Ingram said he is planning to open a campaign office in North Battleford this week.

If elected he said he will bring “a strong voice of reason” and a wide range of experience to the table.
