After over a year's absence, Battlefords MLA Herb Cox is back in cabinet as he takes over the Advanced Education portfolio.

The position was left vacant after Regina-Northeast MLA Kevin Doherty resigned yesterday to focus on family.

“I am really looking forward to taking on this ministry,” Cox said. “I’ve got a lot of learning to do, I know that. Over the next days and weeks I will be getting up to speed on some of the issues and files within this ministry. I am looking forward to getting back with my cabinet colleagues again.”

As for what issues Cox will be tackling, the MLA said it was too early to say. He said in the next days and weeks he will be meeting with officials to figure out the next step.

Cox felt his close working relationship with North West College in North Battleford would help prepare him for his new role.

Cox was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2012, but only stepped down as Environment Minister in 2016 to focus on his treatment. He said he feels well enough to return to the cabinet.
