AAA Stars back to .500 following pair of wins over Blazers

Oct 25, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Following a disappointing 1-4 start to the 2017-18 season, the Battlefords AAA Stars won three straight games to even their record at 4-4.

They beat Swift Current back on Oct. 14, and picked up consecutive wins over the Saskatoon Blazers, the first one coming last Thursday on the road and then the second one occuring last night at home.

Thursday’s win was an effort as the team picked up a 2-0 shutout win and allowed just 26 shots on goaltender Joseph Young. Dylan Esau’s second period goal held up as the game-winner, while Matt Allardyce found the back of the net as well. Ian Hillis also had two assists on the night.

Last night, the defence was lacking, as 43 shots found their way on net, making it a busy night for rookie goaltender Carter Serhyenko. The Saskatoon native made 39 saves in a come-from-behind 6-4 win and is now 3-1 this season.

Tye Scherger opened the scoring halfway through the first but the Stars found themselves tied 1-1 after 20 minutes because of a Josh Nagy power play marker late in the frame. The clubs exchanged second period goals, but then Blake Allan gave the Blazers a 3-2 lead before the period was done.

Meadow Lake native Dylan Esau tied the game for the Stars early in the third period before another setback put the Stars down 4-3 just minutes later.

But 36 seconds after the Blazers took another one-goal lead, Stars forward Adam Beckman scored a shorthanded goal and then two minutes later netted his second of the game to give the home side a 5-4 lead. Ty Mosimann added an empty net goal to make it a 6-4 final.

Mosimann’s goal and two helpers on Tuesday gives him 11 points on the season in eight games, good for top-10 in league scoring.

The Stars currently sit in the eighth and final playoff spot in the 12-team midget AAA league with their 4-4 record.

Their next games are set for this weekend, when they’ll travel east to Tisdale for a pair of road games against the first-place Trojans, who are off to a flying 8-1-1 start.
