New season begins for Battlefords Community Players

Oct 16, 2017 | 2:00 PM

It has often been said that many actors of both stage and screen spend their entire career searching for that one defining role that is the “right fit” or is “personal” to the performer.

For Gift Madojemu such a role has presented itself to her; ironically in her first ever role performance onstage in the upcoming The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God presented by the Battlefords Community Players (BCP).

“This role is the perfect fit for me,” said the young actress who has been involved with the Battlefords Community Players since moving to the area from St. John’s N.L. three years ago. “All my friends that learn about the part have told me it was written for me.”

The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God was written by Lisa Codrington and adapted from a short story by Bernard Shaw. The show kicks off the 2017-18 season for the Battlefords Community Players with show at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17, 19, 20, and 21st at the BCP Clubhouse.

The play revolves around a young girl (Madojemu) who is introduced to God while being raised by a missionary. Eventually the young lady must find God on her own and meets some interesting characters in her journey.

“It’s a play that I believe people should really see,” Madojemu added. “I believe so many people have questions about this subject and it may just get a conversation started.”

A conversation is just what she is hoping for because following the performance there will be an interactive part with the audience to talk about the perceptions of God and spirituality.

Battlefords Community Players executive producer Donna Challis said she is excited for the upcoming season for a couple of reasons.

“This year we have four really strong shows for theatre goers to enjoy,” Challis said. “Secondly we are going to be using our new clubhouse for the very first time this season.”

The clubhouse is located at 102-26 St. W. in Battleford and will host two of this year’s shows including the inaugural show.

“My husband and I saw this play last summer at the Shaw festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake,” Challis said. “The play has actually not been published and this will be only the second time it has been performed in Canada so that is a feather in our cap.”
