Town moving unspent capital to reserves

Sep 20, 2017 | 2:00 PM

The Town of Battleford will move $1.3 million in unspent funds left over from this year into its reserves for future use.

The funds reflect some capital projects that were either not completed or partially completed. In moving the money into reserves, the town will also earmark the funds to complete these projects in 2018.

Mayor Ames Leslie said it is not uncommon for the town to transfer money to reserves each year. He said the $1.3 million is actually a little lower than previously transferred.

“The construction season in Saskatchewan is short to begin with,” he said.

The mayor added when it rains, or there is any type of inclement weather, that creates delays for crews working on projects.

“Quite often we do transfer a lot of the projects through — whether because it didn’t work in tendering, or engineering didn’t get done in time,” the mayor added. “Last year, I think it was a little bit more than it was this year, but it is something that happens quite regularly.”

For most of the capital projects identified, the town was planning to work on them in 2018 in any case. From the $1.3 million transferred, some of the funds include $175,000 to install a new ice plant for the arena in Battleford, and $95,000 for new playground equipment for the Battleford West subdivision.
