Program to help teachers connect students with nature

Aug 9, 2017 | 2:00 PM

With technology on the rise, children are becoming more connected with electronic devices than ever, but Rod Sigueroa, Past President of SaskOutdoors, hopes to help teachers connect them to nature as well.

Sigueroa is a part of a program called Connecting Kids with Nature, which is a workshop for teachers to learn about curriculum-based outdoor activities that can be applied to the classroom.

“Kids are great at connecting with iPads and phones, but it’s that one-on-one with nature that they’re lacking,” Sigueroa said. “I want to make sure that teachers can take kids outside, and the students are learning curriculum activities that they can apply to their everyday life.”

Teachers who have registered will be going out to Blue Mountain Adventure Park for two nights starting on Aug. 9, and will be participating in a variety of activities that will be demonstrated by six different facilitators.

Teachers will be learning other with teachers, survival guides, a yoga instructor that will teach mindfulness techniques, and an elder from the North Battleford region to teach about Indigenous spirituality.

“It’s very important forme as a teacher that my kids get a proper education… by recognizing the Indigenous lands, peoples, their way of knowing, and what they can teach us,” Sigueroa said. “More awareness is key if we want to talk about things like reconciliation.”

Connecting Kids with Nature currently has 10 teachers and 6 facilitators registered to attend, but Sigueroa hopes the teachers coming to learn will pass on the information they learned, and encourage even more teachers to register next year.
