Battleford Bandits eliminated in Western Canadian Softball Championships

Aug 7, 2017 | 1:06 PM

Following day three of the U14 Western Canadian Softball Championships, the girls Battleford Bandits have officially been eliminated from the tournament.

Despite tallying two wins to open the tournament, the Bandits fell short in their following four matches. With a record of 2-4, they did not qualify to compete in the finals.

Head Coach, Regan Lavallee, said despite the Bandits’ final record, it was still a positive weekend.

“I’m so proud of how we played this weekend, it’s been a fabulous experience,” Lavallee said. “We’ll take away the experience we got facing good pitching, good defence, good everything.”

The two other Saskatchewan teams competing saw slightly more success in the round-robin, and ended up facing each other in an elimination round.

The third-place Unity Panthers bested the fourth-place Alameda SE Super Novas and earned the right to represent Saskatchewan in the semi-final match against the Lloydminster Liners.

However, Saskatchewan’s representation for the girls will go no further, as the Liners knocked out the Panthers this morning in a close 6-5 match.

The Liners will now take on the undefeated Surrey Storm, who have proven to be a dominant force throughout the championship.

The tournament has been a struggle for the Saskatchewan boys’ as well.

Two of the three Saskatchewan teams, the Warman Panthers and Delisle Diamond Dogs, only recorded one win between them during the round-robin.

However, the Shellbrook Rangers saw success throughout the tournament as they placed second in the round-robin, earning a spot in the semi-finals against the Cross Lake Wolves.

Sunday morning, the Rangers edged the Wolves 12-5 and will take on the undefeated Barriere Bruins in the final.
