Health region offers prenatal sessions in the park

Aug 3, 2017 | 12:50 PM

A program targetted at young moms-to-be hopes to bring its message to those who need it.

The event, called Prenatal In The Park, is hosted at North Battleford’s Central Park and is free to attend. It involves a number of talks by a local health-care professionals.

Kailla Pilot, a public health nurse with Prairie North Health Region, is organizing the event. She said participants can expect to attend a relaxed, informal group meeting, where they can find out more about what’s involved in taking care of their newborns.

“What we are really trying to attempt here is to make it easier for young moms and teens to come see us, and gain some more insight into their pregnancy,” Pilot said. “We found that sometimes it’s difficult to travel across the busy Territorial Drive to come see us (at Primary Health Centre) at the Frontier Mall, so we wanted to meet them in a more centralized location.”

Some of the topics Pilot will discuss include breastfeeding, and caring for their new babies after delivery. She will also discuss how important it is for mothers to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Pilot wanted to reach out to local school officials about offering a similar program in the high schools also.

The next sessions will be held August 9, 14 and 24 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., outdoors in the park near the North Battleford Library. In the event of rain, the session will be cancelled.
