N.B. Golf and Country Club hosting senior championships

Jul 24, 2017 | 5:00 PM

The North Battleford Golf and Country Club is set to host the 2017 provincial senior golf championships this week.

The tournament, which begins Tuesday and runs until Thursday, will be the 98th senior men’s championship and 54th senior women’s championship.

“We’re looking forward to having a wonderful event here starting tomorrow,” NBGCC director of golf Dana Johnson said on Monday afternoon. “Every year the Saskatchewan Golf Association sends out a bid if you want to host the event. We put in a couple years ago that we would like to host a provincial senior mens and ladies event and we were awarded the bid last year.”

Nearly 100 total people are registered, including 81 men and 17 women.

“The senior event is one of the more well-attended events and we have a lot of local members that are playing in it,” she said.

Twenty-one of the 81 men call the Battlefords home, while Cheryl Hartl is the lone local on the women’s side.

The championships will be three rounds long. The women tee-off at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, while the men begin at 8 a.m.

“Mother nature looks like she’s going to cooperate for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,” Johnson added. “The golf course was already in great shape but now it’s even in better shape and we’re ready for the event.”

George Janson of the Willows GCC will be looking to defend his title on the men’s side and Lorie Boyle of Moose Jaw will be back to defend her title on the women’s side.

The last time the NBGCC hosted a Saskatchewan golf championship was last year when they hosted the mixed team championship in late August.
