Volunteer green thumbs making positive impact on Battlefords community

Jul 22, 2017 | 8:00 AM

This summer, Midwest Food Resources is giving local green thumbs the chance to refine their skills while making a positive impact in the community.

Midwest Food Resources is a food security organization that has operated in the Battlefords for 20 years. The group has three primary programs: nutrition classes, a community garden, and a fresh food box that provides lower-income residents with fresh produce at an affordable price.

The organization began hosting drop-in volunteer gardening nights earlier this week and will continue through the rest of the season.

According to Christine Freethy, Executive Director of Midwest Food Resources, the drop-in program is a wholesome experience.

“This is a great way to learn [how to garden] without the commitment or the fear,” Freethy said. “A project like this really increases not only people’s skill level but also what’s available to vulnerable people.

“This is important…[because] North Battleford has a serious issue with food security in terms of lack of access to nutritious food for people with low incomes.”

Those who volunteer are able to take some of the produce home, while the rest goes towards the fresh food box.

Drop-in volunteer gardening nights take place every Tuesday and Wednesday evening at the Pattinson Gardens, and everyone is welcome regardless of skill level.
