Golf course looking for funds for makeover

Jul 18, 2017 | 11:02 AM

North Battleford Golf and Country Club is looking to upgrade and modernize its site and hopes the town of Battleford will be able to help with some of the costs.

Chad Gartner, North Battleford Golf and Country Club board president, made a presentation to council on July 17 to show proposed design plans for the project, and explain the merits of expanding and improving the golf course.

“The biggest reason for doing the long-range plans is we had to address a couple of issues with the golf course,” Gartner said. “There are some drainage issues, maintenance issues.”

He added the facility “hasn’t had a good update in awhile.”

While the golf course has done work in the last 20 years it hasn’t completed any extensive project to modernize.

Part of the proposal includes expanding the clubhouse, and increasing the practice facility, and creating a new, larger irrigation pond to improve the watering program for the site.

The cost of the full project could take roughly 10 years to complete and is estimated to cost $3.7 million.

The board asked the town of Battleford if it could contribute $150,000 towards the project. It is also asking for support from City of North Battleford.

Gartner said the golf club is a popular tourist spot for the Battlefords and draws many people to the area so improving the facility will also have economic benefits.

“We’re trying to remain competitive,” Gartner said.

The town of Battleford council was interested in the Golf Club board’s plans but was concerned about the value of contribution the golf club was hoping to receive. The town may make a contribution over a 10-year period, rather than as a one-time lump sum.
