Animal shelter keeping an eye on numbers

Jul 12, 2017 | 12:07 PM

Battlefords area residents are encouraged to show their support to the Battlefords Humane Society this summer, and maybe add a new member to their families.

Shelter coordinator Michele Spark said the shelter is getting full and hopes more families will open up their homes to a furry friend.

“At 55 (cats) it’s starting to get up there,” she said. “But it’s not concerning yet.”

The shelter currently has 10 dogs and 55 cats.

Spark said since the dogs are usually the first to be adopted, the shelter doesn’t have much of a problem finding new homes for them. However, cats and kittens are more difficult to adopt out.

She said the numbers sit roughly at par with last month’s.

“We can comfortably fit 40 [cats]. Sitting with 55, we are a little bit over-capacity but it’s nothing we can’t manage medically or as far as quality of care goes,” Spark said.

Spark added since it’s summer time, the shelter is receiving quite a few dogs and cats from new litters born in the spring. Several of the kittens are orphans.

If a person is interested in adopting, Spark stressed cats are the safest when they are not left to wander the streets and neighbours’ backyards.

“We want to remind people to make sure their kittens remain indoors, not only to adhere to the city bylaw mandating any kittens to wear their (licence), but also because it is safer for kittens to stay indoors,” she said. “If they are running at large there is that risk they will get injured or killed.”

Beyond orphaned kittnes, there are several felines that landed in the shelter after ending up in neighbourhood traps. Spark said this includes domestic indoor cats as well as the odd feral cat.

If you are interested in adoption, Spark encourages visitors at the shelter.
