Clements Drive speeders beware

Jun 22, 2017 | 5:00 PM

The City of North Battleford plans to put the brakes on speeders on Clements Drive.

Mayor Ryan Bater said he has received complaints from property owners who are upset by the number of vehicles traveling too fast along this residential street.

“This has come up to council before,” said Bater, adding some councillors have also raised the issue.

Residents are especially concerned about speeding traffic putting pedestrians at risk.

“I think Clements (Drive), because it’s a long, straight street, for some reason some people feel inclined to speed on that street,” said Bater. “There are homes on that street, many homes with children. Speeding down a residential street where there are children is incredibly dangerous.”

The issue came up at a recent city planning committee meeting.

Bater said he is aware some residents in the Clements Drive area have taken matters into their own hands and have tried to flag down vehicles they see traveling too fast, in an attempt to slow them down.

“That’s dangerous too,” said the mayor.

Bater said the city will need to look at some permanent solutions to control traffic.

Suggestions include installing a crosswalk or a three-way stop, possibly at the corner of Hock Avenue, to force traffic to slow down and stop.

“I suggested perhaps we look at a raised crosswalk that would also act as a bit of a speed bump,” said Bater.

He is hoping for further discussions with the city’s engineering and planning departments on the matter.

“My only interest is perhaps to slow traffic down,” he said, adding there might be other safety-related issues to address at the same time. “I think this will be an ongoing discussion with council,” he added.

For the short term, the city will install a radar-speed sign to post speeds of vehicles traveling on Clements Drive, as a temporary solution over the summer, similar to last summer’s efforts.

“Any vehicle traveling will be caught by the radar. Then, their speed will be displayed. So, it brings to the attention to the driver what their speed actually is, and that they are going over the speed limit,” Bater said. “That actually got good results last summer on Clements, and on 95th Street.

The city has problems dealing with speeders on a number of residential streets in North Battleford.

“Any catchment street that is a thoroughfare where you have other residential streets abutting it,” often sees traffic traveling too fast, the mayor said.

He hopes to see the radar-speed sign installed on many streets where drivers are found traveling at high speeds – such as Douglas Avenue, 19th Avenue and 95th Street, in addition to Clements Drive.

“Those are the streets of concern where I would like to see this radar display, just so the drivers become aware that they are going too fast for a residential neighbourhood,” added Bater.
