Four Sharks make the next cut at Sask First

Jun 5, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Four members of the AAA Sharks have made the cut for this summer’s Sask First camps, following Saskatchewan Hockey Association tournaments in April.

Sask First is a series of camps and tournaments for midget and bantam aged players that the SHA runs. This invite is the second step in making one of three provincial teams, which are male U-16, female U-16 and female U-18.

Goaltender Chloe Burt, defenceman Jessie Herner, and forward Ashlee Wolfe were named to the U-16 female camp roster, while Keara Amson was named to the U-18 female team.

Burt split starts with Chantel Weller for the Sharks this year, posting a 4-10 record and .886 save percentage in 14 games as a rookie. Herner posted 11 points from the blueline in her rookie season in 28 games, which was fourth among all rookie defencemen in the league. Wolfe notched eight points in 21 games in her first AAA season, with four goals and four assists.

The U-16 tournament in April saw 136 total players compete, which has now been dwindled down to just 42. After the summer camp, one team will be formed, which will compete at a AAA midget showcase in the fall.

Amson will attend the U-18 summer camp for the second straight year. She tallied 12 points in her third year with the Sharks, a career high, while serving as an assistant captain. She made the cut from 80 players down to 42. Amson also attended the U-16 summer camp two years ago.

After the summer camp, the 42 players will be dwindled down to one provincial team that will compete at the nationals in Quebec City.

There were also nine Battlefords players among the many cuts.

AAA Sharks Chantel Weller and Ryleigh White were invited to the U-16 female tournament but did not make the next round, while the same can be said for AA Sharks Jordyn Blais, Kennedy Larre, and Ryder Milne. AAA Sharks Ali Aitken, Ensley Fendelet, and Alyssa Roach were cut from the U-18 team.

On the boys side, AA Baron Ashton Harris did not make the U-16 male team, which consists of the top-40 bantam players.

The summer camps will take place in late July at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask.
