Radiothon raises over $190,000 for BUH

“It was a great way to kick start our fundraising campaign for our ENT department.”

That was the immediate response of Claudette McGuire of the Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) following the 12-hour On Air for Health Care Radiothon held on Friday on 1050 CJNB,Q98 and 93.3 The Rock. The final total raised from pledges from individuals and businesses was over $190,000.

The Radiothon helped raised funds for the new Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT) department at BUH to purchase state of the art equipment.

“The campaign’s goal was to reach $380,000 and this gives us a tremendous push to get us there,” McGuire said. “We raised almost $200,000 in 12 hours which is amazing and we cannot thank the community enough for what they have accomplished here today.”

McGuire also noted that the BUH Foundation applied for several grants prior to the Radiothon and they are quite confident they will be successful securing these funds.

The need for the equipment became necessary after Dr. Abraham Awobem; an ENT surgeon opted to begin his practice in North Battleford. The hospital had been without an ENT specialist since the retirement of Dr. Gerry Fernandez nearly 30 months ago. However the equipment the hospital needed serious upgrading as the tools to do the job properly were well past their prime.

“It was a great day for our region,” Nic Fransoo of Q98 said. “ Not only does this benefit the ENT department it also sends a message to the medical community that the BUH is serious about offering the best quality of health care in the area.”

Fransoo feels this bodes well for attracting more specialists to the Battlefords Union Hospital in the future.

“I’d like to thank everyone who picked up the phone, donated on line or dropped by the Radiothon today,” McGuire said. “And a huge shout out to all the volunteers and BUH staff to helped out as well.”
