Countdown to radiothon building excitement

May 3, 2017 | 2:00 PM

The countdown is on to the second annual On The Air for Health Care this Friday, May 12 on CJNB/CJNS, Q98 and 93.3 The Rock and the excitement is building.

The 12-hour broadcast will originate on the Battlefords Union Hospital’s main lobby and will embark on raising $380,000 to replace aging equipment in the Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT) department.

“We are very excited for this year’s Radiothon,” Laura Squairs, Operating Room Manager at the BUH, said. “We know the success we had last year and we know how the people of Battlefords really step up when there is a need. We really do have some exceptional people in our area.”

In October 2016, Dr. Abraham Awobem began his practice at the Battlefords Union Hospital as the ENT specialist. In securing a specialist in this field, residents of the area will no longer need to travel to Saskatoon for simple procedures like tonsillectomies.

“For about two and a half years we didn’t have the ability to do any ENT surgeries and we had to send people to Saskatoon,” Squairs added. “So people had to take a day off of work drive down to Saskatoon for the surgery or maybe they had to make more than one visit before the surgery. By having Dr. Awoben and his practice here it is so convenient now for our community.”

Squairs noted that with the new hire, her workload will pick up as she schedules more local surgeries.

“It’s great to take on this challenge because we are meeting the needs of the community and surrounding area,” Squairs said. “These surgeries can now happen sooner which is great because they have pretty hefty wait times in Saskatoon so it is really convenient.”

During the 12-hour On Air for Healthcare Radiothon, groups, businesses and individuals are encouraged to visit the main lobby of the BUH office on May 12 and present their donations which will be aired live.
