Rodeo kicks off in North Battleford

Apr 29, 2017 | 2:00 PM

The 47th Annual Kinsmen Indoor Rodeo kicked off in North Battleford Friday night to a sold-out crowd.

Phil Hoffort has been with the local Kinsmen club for 46 years and was involved in all but the initial rodeo 47 years ago.

He was pleased to see 2,000 tickets sold for the first night of the rodeo and a hefty $2,200 in the pot for the 50-50 draw.

Hoffort, who was selling programs during the night’s performance, said the event started as a small rodeo and has since grown into a “big community event.”

Hoffort credited the local Kinsmen for keeping it going this long and making it the showcase event it is today. He is proud to continue to be a member of the service club and be able to offer his support for such a popular attraction.

Bull riding, ladies’ barrel racing, team roping and steer wrestling were some of the highlights of Friday’s show.

New at the rodeo this year is funny man Hollywood Harris, otherwise known as Cliff Harris when he is not performing. Harris is a bit of a celebrity clown who travelled all the way from Micanopy, Florida, to take part.

He has been performing as a clown in numerous rodeos for 34 years.

“It seemed like it was fun when I was a kid, and, dadgummit, if I haven’t made a living out of it, and raised my family doing it,” Harris said, adding his son Brinson James the Entertainer made an appearance a couple of years back.

“I’ve been doing it a long time. We got our start up here, several years back,” Harris said.

He added, “there are not many funny men in Canada,” which made him a popular draw for the North Battleford show this year.

The rodeo continues Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
