Volunteer group has soft spot for animals

Some might call Heaven’s Hellions the service club for people who don’t usually join service clubs.

The Battlefords area branch of the volunteer group has a number of younger members and is actively recruiting, with the aim to get out into the community to see how they can lend a helping hand.

“We’re just a group that wants to give back to the people in the community,” Ken Portman, treasurer of the Battlefords chapter said.

The members of the non-profit organization have helped at the Lighthouse Serving the Battlefords emergency shelter for individuals in need and also took part in a charity bottle drive for the Humane Society. Portman said other chapters have also been known to help people facing challenges.

“It’s basically giving back to anyone who needs help, in any sort of way,” Portman said.

He describes the nine-strong volunteer group as a “conservative community organization of regular people, who seek to assist and support our citizens.”

The volunteer club, which has been running locally for about a year, also has chapters in other areas around Saskatchewan and throughout the country.

Portman estimates the local group has raised about $2,000 in total for the Humane Society of the Battlefords from a couple of fundraisers and hopes to continue this support.

In doing so, around eight members and their families recently spent a Saturday afternoon washing dogs and walking cats at the shelter, where members also pop in to walk the dogs on Saturdays whenever they have time.

“Everybody wants to give back to the community,” Portman said. “There are a lot of people who need help. We just decided to form a group that could give back.”

He further explained how Heaven’s Hellions was formed as a volunteer group that anyone can join, including people who are new to giving back.

“There are lots of people who sometimes are a little shy doing things alone,” Portman added on the subject of volunteering.

“We can all go out together and help the community in any kind of way they need,” he said.
